It’s common to hit a low point in the day, week or month. I mean, even the best of the best run into mental roadblocks now and then, right? Feeling unmotivated can be attributed to a vast array of causes including but not limited to fatigue and monotony.
Rest assured, there is a literal plethora of cures for the average “slow day”. Saddle up and get ready to boost your attitude into high gear with small slice of that plethora (aka these 5 tips).
- Get up, stand up, make a move. Physically moving around can be argued to be the best way to awake the senses. The more awake you are, the more you’ll want to work.
- Check in with co-workers. Chatting with co-workers about their projects is a great way to stumble on new and interesting ideas. Processing ideas breeds thought, and that’s what you’re looking for.
- Read the news. Chances are, you’ll see things you love and hate in the news. Positive and negative responses trigger chemical reactions in the body which are closely associated in motivation.
- Listen to a famous speech. This may be cliche, but that’s because it works. Queue up JFK or another popular leader on YouTube and you’ll be surprised at how motivating such a thing can be.
- Recall a particular time you accomplished a difficult task. Write the experience down and read it back to yourself. Remembering a time when motivation was ever-present can bring on the same feelings even years later.

Getting up and moving helps me sometimes - it also helps clear my head after I’ve been working flat out on a project all morning.
Also, if I just finished something and I’m not eager to get started on another project (like I am right now, heh), I’ll do something like clean out my inbox, organize my files, or something that at least keeps me engaged with work.
Or doodle! That also seems to work.
