Ah yes, punctuality… as critical a component to the business world as money, phones, and steaming cups of joe have been in the 20th century onwards. To be late is to be behind the times; times that wait for no person. Despite a best effort and well-meaning intentions, late is late, and the swift moving gears of the workplace roll forth in a somewhat cruel fashion. As if to say, we, the aforementioned gears, are well lubricated whether you are here or not… but your presence is still required… now.

If you’re still reading, chances are you’re like me and are driven by a personal commitment to professional excellence towards enlightenment. The path that we set forth on is not exactly a silky smooth wave of constant compliment, but rather a challenging course with both highs and lows. This folks, is what makes life fun.

Fun is a result of properly navigating the path in question, and a large part of this is indeed arriving at what time your employer has set forth as the beginning of the work day. Regardless if you’re never late, always late, or just looking to improve your schedule a bit, I recommend reviewing and adhering to the following three points of punctuality.

- Rest properly the night before heading into work. Little rest means little energy the next day, it’s as simple as that. When we allow our bodies to soak up a great night’s sleep, we are much better suited for carrying out tasks after waking.

- Load up on fruits, veggies and protein. Fats and empty calories will not properly fuel you from 9 to 5. Nature’s goodies like bananas, bran, chicken, etc., are the foundations of a diet that promotes long lasting, steady energy.

- Wake up earlier than you need to. This is the single most important key to being on time in the mornings. Allow yourself extra time for things like a lost sock, traffic, breakfast, etc. You’ll be surprised at how much more relaxed and productive you’ll be without rushing against the clock in the a.m.
